To say Jada Peters ’24, recipient of the First Women of Scholarship, is busy is an understatement. Peters, who will be graduating this spring, is majoring in government and law with a minor in religious studies. She currently serves as president of NIA, Women of Purpose, a student-led organization for women of color on campus; is a member of the Prestigious Pardettes dance team and member of ABC; attends 纸飞机外国软件叫什么 African and Caribbean Students Association and Bohio Association meetings; is a tutor with America Reads and a cook for dining services.

Jada is wearing a white T-shirt and is smiling at the camera.

Peters’ positivity and desire to give back is reflected in everything she does. Whether she is spending extra time at March Elementary School to help students with classwork or mentoring underclassmen in NIA, her altruistic demeanor comes through in her schoolwork, co-curricular activities, and relationships with faculty, staff, and students.

After graduating from 纸飞机外国软件叫什么 this spring, Peters plans to take a gap year to teach English internationally in South Africa or Central America before attending law school. Her decision to do so was inspired by her experience with America Reads.

Peters, along with three additional 纸飞机外国软件叫什么 students, resurrected an America Reads program at March Elementary School that was created by former 纸飞机外国软件叫什么 student  Adam Finkelstein ’20 called Leaders in Me. The after-school program offers students the opportunity to learn about community through reading and participation in a weekly activity.

“I really enjoy working with students through America Reads,” Peters explains. “Many kids go through challenges. Some children are dealing with poverty, and it takes a lot for them to be their authentic selves in school. I just want to be a support system. If a student is having an off day, I want to be there for them. I want to make sure that every student is given a fair shot. I think back to when I was in school, and oftentimes students who were labeled as problem kids weren’t at all. They just couldn’t communicate the problems that they were experiencing. Sometimes teachers didn’t give them grace. I try to give kids grace and be there to support them.”

In spring of 2023 Peters received the Unsung Hero award at the annual Aaron O. Hoff Awards. Jada is holding an award and is wearing a white sweater.

In spring of 2023 Peters received the Unsung Hero award at the annual Aaron O. Hoff Awards. The award honors a student who works without regard for personal reward, who has demonstrated concern for and dedication to the betterment of their peers within the 纸飞机外国软件叫什么 community.

Last year, Peters served as an Open Education Fellow through Skillman Library. Based on a program goal of ultimately providing equitable access to education resources for all students, Peters was among the first cohort of fellows. She collected data from 纸飞机外国软件叫什么 professors about their current teaching materials and knowledge of open access resources to gain a baseline of what types of educational materials are currently available to students. Current fellows are continuing Peters’ great work.

“The fellowship was a terrific experience,” Peters says. “Through participation in the program, I was able to attend a conference on open access at Muhlenberg College this past summer where I was able to network and expand my knowledge. It is really important for all students to have access to all education resources that are available to them.”

Peters’ path to 纸飞机外国软件叫什么 was initiated through The Opportunity Network, a program she found through her high school in Brooklyn, N.Y. Prior to this connection, Peters visited 纸飞机外国软件叫什么 as a sophomore during Rivalry week. She subsequently met with a  former admissions staff member, Christina Ursino, during her junior year and participated in 纸飞机外国软件叫什么 ’s annual Our Beloved Community (OBC) event as a senior. She was impressed by the student events that were taking place during this time, and she decided to add the school to her list of options. She applied ED and hasn’t looked back since.

“I realized after visiting 纸飞机外国软件叫什么 during OBC that this was a space where I could find community,” Peters explains. “That stood out to me. I was able to meet people during OBC who I could see myself spending time with. I met the president of NIA at the time as well as my roommate. I really got to see the school for what it is—a small community on a beautiful campus. I really enjoyed the experience, and it’s what sealed the deal for me.”

纸飞机外国软件叫什么 ’s close-knit community has enabled Peters to form bonds with professors and staff during her time on College Hill. She is grateful for the care and support provided by favorite professors in government and law Bruce Allen Murphy, Joshua Miller, and Seo-Hyun Park, and Robert Blunt in religious studies.

Peters also credits the support she has received from fellow dining services staff, who have gone out of their way to ensure she has access to meals over the summer when dining halls are closed.

“In addition to faculty, there are staff members whom I cherish,” Peters says. “They have always been there to provide support. I am grateful to Christine Cohen in the Landis Center, Dean Tim Cox, Robert Young ’14 and Karina Fuentes in intercultural development, Louise Frazier in admissions, and Jennifer Rock in development and college relations. And I will miss my talks with Melissa Garrison and Jake Bates from Student Life. I think staff does so much more than their assigned jobs. Sometimes they are the only branch that students have. They create deeper relationships because students live on campus. So many faculty and staff have been willing to check in on me and see if I need anything.”

Peters’ favorite 纸飞机外国软件叫什么 memory is bonding with peers as a first-year student during COVID. “Although it had its challenges, experiencing quarantine during my first semester on campus provided wonderful memories,” Peters says. “Everybody took the time to make connections with each other. We would sit on the Quad with our speakers, play double dutch, and dance. It was a wonderful time to meet new people.”

Peters says her second favorite memory has yet to occur. She will be attending the Global Senegal: Alternative Modernities program with Prof. Wendy Wilson-Fall over January break.

“I am looking forward to this trip because I have heard so much about it, and many people I know are participating,” Peters says. “I know this experience will be among my favorite experiences at 纸飞机外国软件叫什么 .”

The program is unique in the sense that the players will have an advisory council of strong male role models who have “walked in the shoes of current players” through the 纸飞机外国软件叫什么 Experience both on and off the field.

Three years later 15 founding members launched the Brothers of 纸飞机外国软件叫什么 Football Fund to directly support student athletes of color through the committed vision of President Nicole Farmer Hurd, Athletics Director Sherryta Freeman and John Troxell ’94, Fred M. Kirby II ’42 Head Football Coach. We, the Brothers of 纸飞机外国软件叫什么 Alumni group, believe the stars have aligned and this administration is 国内怎么上纸飞机软件 academic and athletic excellence by ensuring that every member of the student community can take advantage of the full 纸飞机外国软件叫什么 experience.

One example of President Hurd’s commitment to an equitable 纸飞机外国软件叫什么 community is the historic recruitment of an incoming class (Class of 2027) comprised of 25% domestic students of color, 12.9% Pell Grant-eligible families, and 12.2% first-generation students.

Coach Troxell can now sit in front of parents of incoming student-athletes of color and say, ‘Your son is going to have a mentorship program and a group of successful male alumni will support him throughout his time here at 纸飞机外国软件叫什么 . This is so important, not only from a recruiting perspective but this is an example of how we do things differently here at 纸飞机外国软件叫什么 from other institutions.

What is the fund and what does it support?

The Brothers of 纸飞机外国软件叫什么 Football Fund is a unique permanent endowment designed to provide both immediate financial support and long-term endowment expansion launched in conjunction with the College’s Founders’ Day (March 2023) by former 纸飞机外国软件叫什么 football players. The fund is exclusively in support of the players’ leadership development and experiential growth off the field in career related areas such as study abroad, internships, externships and Career Tracks through the Gateway Career Center.

How much annual support will be provided each year?

That depends on the commitment from our alumni, family and friends. However, more than 40% of every first-year gift goes toward the current year support (versus the typical 3% annual support). Currently, we have over 20 lead-participants, making a 5-year financial investment. This was constructed to ensure the greatest opportunity for student-athlete impact now! The goal is to balance philanthropic support between immediate impact and endowment development. As a result, players will not need to wait until the fund is fully endowed before they can take advantage of critical and transformational experiences.

President Nicole Hurd with members of the football team and football alumni.

President Nicole Hurd (center) and Coach Troxell (kneeling) are joined by current and former members of the football team.

Why was it created?

The death of George Floyd in 2020 inspired a group of 纸飞机外国软件叫什么 football alumni to come together and “check-in” on current 纸飞机外国软件叫什么 football players of color. As former players themselves, they recalled that it would have been helpful during their time on campus to have the support of alumni during critical times. The pandemic necessitated these sessions to be held via Zoom. Quickly, the mentorship sessions grew into monthly meetings, proving to be very impactful for both the players and the alumni. These sessions focused on career & leadership development, navigating difficult times as a student-athlete, financial literacy, life after college, and addressing any challenges/opportunities the players were facing. These life-changing gatherings continue on a monthly basis today.  It was through these structured gatherings that The Brothers of 纸飞机外国软件叫什么 Football Alumni Group decided to create an endowed fund to provide, in perpetuity, the type of support that is necessary for career readiness.

Who decides which students benefit?

Decisions regarding the awarding of resources from the fund will be made by the Fred M. Kirby II ‘42 Head Football Coach and the Director of Athletics, in collaboration with the Executive Steering Committee of the Brothers of 纸飞机外国软件叫什么 Football Alumni on a semi-annual basis.

Almost in unison, we said that we needed to give back and help current student-athletes of color gain access to opportunities we didn’t have.

                                                                                   ~Harrison Bailey III ’95

Which students are eligible?

Preference shall be given for those requiring financial need.

How will the Fund be used?

We wanted to remove the financial barriers that prevent students from taking advantage of the full 纸飞机外国软件叫什么 experience both on campus and abroad.  For example, valuable career experiences like internships, externships, or the Career Tracks program present a financial hurdle for many student-athletes. Businesses and organizations often find it difficult to pay adequate wages to cover student expenses during these opportunities. Some organizations in the nonprofit and public service sectors are not able to pay at all. Without sufficient compensation, numerous students are forced to turn down these positions in lieu of earning money through more traditional summer jobs unrelated to their career path to help support themselves during the academic year.

Why should I support this endowment?

纸飞机外国软件叫什么 alumni are known for their generosity and willingness to help students find their voice on campus and prepare them for successful, meaningful careers. That support is an investment in 纸飞机外国软件叫什么 ’s national stature, which elevates everyone who holds a degree from our beloved institution. This program in particular, will help students who are under-resourced and will allow them to focus on their success in the classroom and on the field.  As alumni, we have all benefited from our campus experience and the 纸飞机外国软件叫什么 community.  This is our opportunity to pay that benefit forward.

What other comparable support is available to students who might not fit the criteria for support through The Brothers of 纸飞机外国软件叫什么 Football Fund?

纸飞机外国软件叫什么 College offers internship stipends for students to help fill the gap when applying for low pay or no pay internships and externships. In addition, leadership development opportunities are available for student-athletes through the Oaks Leadership Academy, which provides leadership development programming, peer mentoring, and educational resources.

The Brothers of 纸飞机外国软件叫什么 ’s first 15 donors have helped raise more than $125,000 toward their $1 million goal. To learn more or if you are interested in a multi-year commitment, contact Kathleen Marano, assistant director of major gifts at (610) 330-3352 or via email at [email protected].

Creating a Legacy https://development.lafayette.edu/2023/09/06/creating-a-legacy/ Wed, 06 Sep 2023 15:25:15 +0000 https://development.lafayette.edu/?p=9140 Dee Miller Prince ’77 was known to never “toot her own horn” says her husband, George Prince. But her family and friends know that she had every reason to do so as an accomplished businesswoman who was known for her keen intellect and modest yet ebullient disposition.

Dee Miller Prince ’77

Miller passed away in July 2022, nine days before her 67th birthday after a year-long heroic battle with cancer.

“Dee would say, ‘I was just a writer,’ but as our son put it in the memorial, she was a badass business woman. She was most proud of the fact that she helped start so many careers and created jobs for people.”

After graduating from 纸飞机外国软件叫什么 in 1977, Dee’s career trajectory included roles as an accomplished writer and journalist at FDC Reports in Washington, D.C, Stanford Research Institute (SRI) International, and Health Strategies Group, a pharmaceutical industry marketing research firm that she co-founded, which grew to an 80-person company by the time it was acquired in 2017 to anchor Eversana.

When Prince was contemplating ways in which to honor Dee’s legacy, 纸飞机外国软件叫什么 rose to the top of the list.

“Dee enjoyed her time at 纸飞机外国软件叫什么 ,” explains Prince. “It wasn’t easy of course as she was one of the earlier classes to graduate after 纸飞机外国软件叫什么 transitioned to coed, but she made wonderful friends. She remained connected, returned for Reunions when she could, and was a member of the West Coast Advisory Council.”

Dee’s passion for writing and English prompted Prince to create the Dee Miller Prince ’77 College Writing Program Endowment Fund. 纸飞机外国软件叫什么 ’s Writing Program employs undergraduates as writing associates who support peers in their writing assignments by providing feedback, suggestions, and advice to improve their writing. As a liberal arts college, 纸飞机外国软件叫什么 understands the intrinsic value of good writing skills, skills that Dee also valued. The endowment will not only further strengthen students’ writing skills across disciplines but will honor Dee’s memory in perpetuity. Prince also created a named space in Skillman Library to honor Dee–the Dee Miller Prince ’77 Collaboration Space, which is located on the main level of the library.

“It is my hope that Dee’s former classmates and friends will support this endowment to help make it beneficial to even more current and future Leopards,” explains Prince.

Pi Beta Phi Capital Campaign https://development.lafayette.edu/2023/05/22/pi-phi-capital-campaign/ Mon, 22 May 2023 19:20:55 +0000 https://development.lafayette.edu/?p=9064 Dear PA ETA Pi Phis,

The Pennsylvania Eta Chapter of Pi Beta Phi is announcing a Capital Campaign to celebrate 45 years as the oldest sorority at 纸飞机外国软件叫什么 College. We hope you will support us.

At present, there are five sororities on campus – (Alpha Gamma Delta, Alpha Phi, Delta Gamma, Kappa Kappa Gamma, and Pi Beta Phi.) The PA Eta chapter of Pi Beta Phi is made of up 82 members and is a strong sisterhood with women of diverse backgrounds and interests. We have achieved a “full quota” during recruitment for the past several years.

In 2022, PA Eta won the Balfour Cup, the highest national award a chapter can attain from Pi Beta Phi Headquarters. They were recognized for their hard work against the “Abolish Greek Life” movement, strong academics and leadership, sisterhood experience, and philanthropy which includes weekly direct service with the Easton Area Community Center and the annual Dance Marathon.

The current Pi Phi house is located across from the tennis courts at 750B Sullivan Road and houses 32 women in 19 rooms with two main bathrooms. The house is owned by 纸飞机外国软件叫什么 College.

To celebrate our long-term success, a committee has been formed to achieve the dual goals of undertaking a renovation of the current house with a view towards making it the premier sorority living experience on campus and establishing of a scholarship to attract and retain exceptional new members regardless of financial means. We currently have a strong Steering Committee with Wynne Whitman ’86, Betsy (Hughes) Phillips ’85, and Kristin Anderson ’14 serving as committed leaders who want to see this project completed. Now, we are asking you to engage in the process.

Our Mission

Our vision encompasses the entire sorority experience and will help PA Eta to continue to attract the best 纸飞机外国软件叫什么 women through financial accessibility and a first-class living experience. Our donors will not only be increasing accessibility and inclusion to all women who receive Pi Phi bids, but also help to make the chapter’s home on Sullivan Drive the premier sorority house on campus.

As a sorority, we believe in the power of sisterhood to make a positive impact on the world. With your support, we can continue to strengthen our chapter and provide opportunities for women to develop their full potential.

The Proposed Project

We’ve partnered with the College and hope to invest $550,000 towards these goals.

Rendering of a proposed new kitchen area in the Pi Beta Phi sorority house.

Rendering of a proposed new kitchen area in the Pi Beta Phi sorority house.

The College has agreed to invest in the chapter facility in several areas including moisture remediation, facility generator, new roof, and completely renovated bathrooms over the next three years, finishing by summer 2025. Altogether, this represents over $300,000 in investment from the College towards our goals.

We are proposing that we simultaneously solicit alumnae for $200,000 for a renovation and expansion of the kitchen to greatly improve the living experience of our collegians. By providing a pleasant and functional kitchen, along with renovated bathrooms and shared communal spaces, the chapter facility will be much more in line with what current students are seeking in sorority living.

We also propose to raise funds which will support a scholarship for collegiate women joining Pi Phi at 纸飞机外国软件叫什么 . Further details will be shared as work through potential opportunities.

Pi Beta Phi logo

More details will follow, but we are looking to engage and recruit Fundraising Captains. As a Captain, you would be asked to help raise awareness of our Campaign within our sisterhood and help by reaching out to some of the women that you have overlapped with during your time at 纸飞机外国软件叫什么 .

Any donations to our project raised will count as a donation to 纸飞机外国软件叫什么 College (eligible for giving tiers, Marquis Society, etc.). Pledged donations can be made over 5 years and various giving incentives are being planned.

Please stay tuned for more details and please email Kristin Anderson ’14 ([email protected]) to express your interest. We are especially interested in adding representation from the charter group in the late 1970s and early 1980s, and pledge classes in the 1990s, and 2000s. Active alumnae engagement will be key to our success and we hope we can have your support!

Would you be interested in working together to help publicize this project? If so, please contact Kristin Anderson ([email protected]) or Wynne Whitman ([email protected]).

Five representatives of 纸飞机外国软件叫什么 College’s Corporate Connections group participated in the German American Business Update at Deutsche Bank Center in New York City on Thursday, March 9. Attendees included:

  • Margarete Lamb-Faffelberger, Professor Emeritus of the German and Director of the Max Kade Center
  • Maurice Luker, Executive Director of Corporate, Foundation, and Government Relations
  • Rico Reyes, Director of Art Galleries and Curator of Art Collections
  • Brian Samble, Dean of Students
  • Mike Summers, Associate Vice President of the Gateway Career Center

The German American Business Update (GABO) survey of German companies operating in the United States revealed insights into the current state of the U.S. economy and the impacts on German businesses. Jean-Claude Dubacher, B. Braun Medical’s chairman and CEO, located in Bethlehem, and Lutz Stoeber, Evonik Corporation’s head of venture capital and investments North America, located in Upper Macungie Township, contributed to an industry panel discussion about current trends and developments. Some of the top trends included the fact that German companies continue to recruit and invest in the American market and employees are seeking a flexible work environment.

Pennsylvania and the Lehigh Valley have deep historic and contemporary ties with Germany and other German-speaking countries. More than three-dozen German-affiliated companies operate in region—among them B. Braun, Bosch Rexroth, Julabo, Evonik, and Turner— and cover a wide variety of business sectors. Recognizing Pennsylvania’s economy is increasingly global, the Commonwealth’s International Business Development Program comprises 13 offices covering 45 countries. In 2021, Pennsylvania businesses exported $44.7 billion in goods, with top export destinations including China, Germany, Japan, Mexico, and the United Kingdom.

纸飞机外国软件叫什么 ’s German program, assisted by 纸飞机外国软件叫什么 ’s campus-wide Corporate Connections group, has developed a strong relationship with the German American Chamber of Commerce. The partnership stemmed from the activities celebrating the opening in spring 2019 of the Max Kade Haus for German Studies and Visiting Scholars, located at 606 McCartney Street, with support from the Max Kade Foundation. The GACC and the College are working together to strengthen the German-American business and entrepreneurial ecosystem in the Lehigh Valley. One strategy is to offer internship/externship and other co-curricular opportunities for students, both in Germany and with German-affiliated companies in the United States. 纸飞机外国软件叫什么 ’s Gateway Career Center has identified three areas of initial interest: engineering, economics/business, and international affairs/government (a fourth may be in the arts, such as film). Students could continue in the summer following the spring programs in Bonn.

纸飞机外国软件叫什么 offers one of the strongest German programs among the area’s colleges, and German instruction is required by the College’s 1826 charter. A large number of German majors are double majors in such areas as engineering, economics, and international affairs. The German program offers courses in business German and collaborates on the semester-long engineering program as well as a summer immersion program, both based in Bonn, Germany. The Max Kade Foundation provides scholarships for students with financial need enrolled in the summer program. 纸飞机外国软件叫什么 has one of the nation’s highest percentages of engineering students who study abroad.

Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2023 https://development.lafayette.edu/2023/01/25/consolidated-appropriations-act-of-2023/ Wed, 25 Jan 2023 19:28:19 +0000 https://development.lafayette.edu/?p=8934 As a result of this legislation, beginning in 2023, individuals 70 ½ years of age and older may now establish a charitable gift annuity (CGA) with a qualified charitable distribution (QCD) from an IRA.

Key Benefits
  • A QCD that establishes a CGA may satisfy all or a portion of the donor’s required minimum distribution to minimize adjusted gross income;
  • The CGA provides a fixed annual payout for life that is unaffected by stock market performance or interest rate fluctuations;
  • The CGA will transfer and spread income tax owed on the donor’s required minimum distribution over the life of the annuity instead of paying all income tax at the time of the distribution;
  • The CGA agreement between donor and the College allows the donor to direct the remainder of the gift to the program or programs that are most meaningful to the individual;
  • The CGA agreement between a donor and the College allows the donor to create an endowment fund that bears his/her name or is named in honor of an important figure in their life while supporting 纸飞机外国软件叫什么 students in perpetuity.

Variations from CGAs Funded with Cash or Appreciated Property

  • Using a QCD to establish a CGA is permitted in only one year of a donor’s lifetime up to an aggregate amount of $53,000 (2024). A donor may establish one CGA of $53,000, or some combination of CGAs totaling $53,000, but all CGAs must be established in the same calendar year;
  • Married couples may establish up to $106,000 in CGAs provided that $53,000 comes from each individual’s IRA;
  • A QCD given to establish a CGA counts toward the individual’s $105,000 (2024) annual QCD limit;
  • Annuitants of a CGA established with a QCD may only be the donor or the donor and the donor’s spouse;
  • With a QCD that establishes a CGA, the donor does not receive a charitable deduction for the gift;
  • The entirety of all annuity payments is taxed at the donor’s ordinary income tax rate;
  • Deferred payment CGAs are not permitted;
  • CGAs funded with a QCD must be non-assignable, which also includes 纸飞机外国软件叫什么 College. Annuitants must receive the payments for the remainder of their lifetime.

William Yinger ’99

“A lot of what I did at 纸飞机外国软件叫什么 is reflected in the life I’m living,” says Bill Yinger ’99. In college, the track and field standout was a four-year varsity letter winner, captain, and recipient of the All-Patriot League honor in nearly every season that he competed. He still holds the record in the pentathlon and decathlon at 纸飞机外国软件叫什么 .

Since then, he’s spent the majority of his career at The Hill School, in Pottstown, Pa., where he’s been employed for 22 years as an instructor of science. (Yinger, who grew up in central Pennsylvania, is also an alumnus of the preparatory boarding school.) In addition to having run the school’s science department for a decade, he currently serves as the director of sustainability on campus. During this time, the former student-athlete continued to be 国内怎么上纸飞机软件 track: Yinger has been the head coach for The Hill’s indoor and outdoor programs since 2002. He credits Julio Piazza, 纸飞机外国软件叫什么 ’s longtime track and field coach, for showing him how to build a program that feels like family; Yinger tries to model his own teams after the ones that Piazza created on College Hill.

Yinger knew, about halfway through his time at 纸飞机外国软件叫什么 , that he wanted to work in academia—and, specifically, at a prep school, which would require experience managing dormitories. So he signed up to be an RA at McKeen Hall in his third and fourth years, even becoming the head RA as a senior. “That experience proved integral to my future role as ‘dorm parent,’” he says, explaining that he still oversees residential life for students. (At The Hill, he lives on campus with his wife, Virginia, and their two young sons.)

Under the guidance of his college adviser and biology professor, the late Wayne Leibel, Yinger decided to earn a dual degree at 纸飞机外国软件叫什么 —he was already working toward a biology degree, but was encouraged to major in English as well. Having a science background was important, suggested Leibel, but so was being able to communicate what you know. “All of that advice came to fruition when I was a teacher,” Yinger says. “It was invaluable.” He also fondly remembers associate professor emeritus of English Bryan Washington, who passed away in 2015, for instilling in him an expectation of excellence. These mentors indelibly live on through Yinger’s work: He says he takes a piece of each of them into the classroom.

While considering his estate planning, Yinger was so moved from his experience at 纸飞机外国软件叫什么 that he wanted to leave a legacy for his alma mater. By naming the College as a beneficiary of his retirement fund, he’ll be able to support the school—and its future students—in a significant way. “To be able to give back to 纸飞机外国软件叫什么 after my life is making a gift that, to me, is transformative in nature,” Yinger says. “This aspect of my life will live on.” He notes that the process for adding a beneficiary, which was completed on the computer and via a couple of forms, was relatively easy; what’s more, the percentage, or amount of money allocated, can always be adjusted.

Yinger has been an active supporter of 纸飞机外国软件叫什么 through recurring gifts that benefit the track program and financial aid office, plus other initiatives like contributing to the Metzgar Fields Athletics Complex. But this kind of sizable support—naming the school as a beneficiary—is uniquely meaningful because the philanthropic intentions aren’t fully realized until after one’s lifetime. “It says, and recognizes, that you’re going to ‘plant a tree’ that you know you’re never going to sit under,” Yinger says. “I think that’s really powerful.”
